Remember the smell of fireworks as a kid? That metallic, gun powdery smell that filled the air as you held your punk out, listening for the hiss of a spark so you can take off running? That spark made lights glow, pops go boom, and fountains spew. And so it began, the Fourth of July.
I have very fond memories of Independence Day. My parents were always ready to watch my brother and I's firework show-and join in the fun as well. We would go down to the local firework stand on the edge of town and load up. I always had to get a fountain or two, my brother got the typical black cat fireworks (and some tanks too), and my dad would pick up morning glories for my mom. Then we would run home and wait impatiently for the sun to start going down. We had a few stages for our shows - the backyard, driveway, front yard, and of course, the road out in front of our house. That's the thing about small towns, you can shoot off fireworks in town, just make sure you drive through town slowly and wait for the roman candles to finish before crossing the street. I can still see my dad bending down with a cigarette in his mouth, helping to keep my hand steady as we celebrated the holiday that signifies so much for our country. And when we finally blasted through our goodies, we would settle down and watch the big fireworks show. Sitting in our lawn chairs, eating homemade popcorn or popsicles, waiting for each colorful boom and saying at each one, "Ohhhh, Awwww." Eventually I will teach L to light fireworks and hopefully he will love the holiday as much as I do. For the past couple years we have celebrated with our friends, and this year was so much fun as our babies are older and can all play together. I ended up completing a two page spread for this years festivities. I used the Bright & Bold, School Themed Cards, Essential Overlays - White, and Just Add Color Overlay kits. Enjoy!
